What Happens on Roof Replacement Day
What to expect when your roof is replaced, from tear-off and decking checks to cleanup, plus how to prepare your home, family and pets for the day.
A roof replacement is loud, busy and usually over faster than homeowners expect. Knowing what happens, and how to prepare, makes the day much easier.
Before the crew arrives
- Move cars out of the driveway and garage if we'll be working above it
- Take down pictures and fragile items on walls and shelves; vibration from tear-off travels
- Cover belongings in the attic, since some dust and debris will fall
- Keep pets and kids inside or away from the work area
- Mow the lawn the day before so nails are easier to find during cleanup
Tear-off
The crew protects landscaping and the sides of the house with tarps, then removes the old shingles and underlayment down to the decking. This is the loudest part of the day.
Decking inspection
With the roof stripped, we can see the wood decking. Any soft, rotted or damaged sheets are replaced before anything goes on top. We'll show you what we found and explain any added cost before replacing it.
The new roof system
New drip edge, underlayment, flashing, pipe boots, ventilation and shingles go on as one system, finished with ridge cap. Details like nail placement and flashing are what make a roof last, so this is where we take our time.
Cleanup and walkthrough
We haul away the debris and run magnetic sweepers across the yard and driveway to catch stray nails. Then we walk the finished roof with you, answer questions, and register your manufacturer warranty.
