After a hailstorm: your checklist
Work through this in the first few days after hail hits. Print it, or save it as a PDF to fill in on your phone.
1. Stay safe
- Stay off the roof, wet or damaged shingles are dangerous
- Watch for downed power lines and report them
- If water is coming in, move valuables away and catch drips
- Keep people out from under any sagging, wet ceiling
2. Document
- Write down the storm date and time: ________
- Photograph hailstones next to a coin or ruler
- Take wide photos of every side of the house
- Take close-ups of dents, cracks and torn screens
- Photograph any interior stains or leaks
3. Check from the ground
- Gutters and downspouts: dents, low spots, pulled seams
- Granules piled at the bottom of downspouts
- Roof vents, turbines and the top of the AC unit: dings
- Siding and trim: cracks, chips, spatter marks
- Windows and screens: cracks, dents, tears
- Fences, deck, mailbox and cars: dents and splits
4. Protect the house
- Cover any opening or broken window to keep water out
- Keep receipts for tarps or emergency repairs
- Don't let anyone on the roof without checking them out first
5. Before you call your insurer
- Find your declarations page (coverage and deductible)
- Note your wind and hail deductible: ________
- Check your policy's deadline for reporting damage
- Get a professional roof inspection and photo report
- Keep a log of every call: date, name, claim number
6. Choosing a roofer
- Local office address and proof of insurance
- Everything in writing, never a blank contract
- No full payment up front
- Walk away from anyone offering to cover your deductible (illegal in Texas)
